Exclusive: EliteXC signs former NFL... (viewed 418 times)

Elite Xtreme Combat has signed former NFL player Bobby Jones to a contract, ProElite.com (SamCaplan.ProElite.com) has confirmed exclusively through Jones' manager, Mike Camp.

An undefeated heavyweight with a record of 2-0, Jones first made his MMA debut on August 24, 2007 during a Fight Fest show in Ohio, where he recorded a TKO over Darby Hodge at just 0:34 into round 1. He followed up his successful debut with a second victory this past January when he recorded another TKO in the first round, this time against William Clifford.

Jones is a graduate of Penn State and in addition to lettering in football for the university as an offensive lineman, he was also a member of the wrestling team as a senior. Additionally, Jones was also a high school wrestling champion.

After Penn State, Jones played one season for the New York Giants in 2002. He appeared in 11 games that year but was eventually released. He continued his pro football career with a brief stint in the Arena Football League and was also a high school teacher.

He ultimately decided to test his competitive fire by transitioning into mixed martial arts after being exposed to the sport through competitive grappling and televised MMA events.

"Somebody introduced me to submission wrestling, grappling, and I got into that and I loved it, and did very well there," Jones was quoted as saying in an ESPN.com article last year. "I wanted to do something more and I watched MMA on TV all the time, UFC and Pride, and I fell in love with it."

Jones joins an EliteXC heavyweight division that already houses prospects Brett Rogers, Jon Murphy, and Dave Herman.
