Koppenhaver, Yoshida, Tan, and Kim added to UFC 84 undercard; 11 bouts now planned for May fight card
1 month ago
Two welterweight bouts featuring several prospects for the UFC's 170 pound division have been added to the undercard of UFC 84 scheduled for May 24 in Las Vegas, UFC.com's Thomas Gerbasi is reporting.
The bouts added include season six "Ultimate Fighter" reality TV show alumnus Jon Koppenhaver taking on Yoshiyuki Yoshida and Jason Tan squaring off against Korean fighter Dong Hyun Kim.
Koppenhaver last fought for the UFC during the live season finale of TUF 6 on December 8. He recorded a third round TKO over Jared Rollins in a fight that was discussed as a possible fight of the year candidate by several pundits.
Yoshida, who has never fought in the UFC before, has a lifetime pro MMA record of 9-2, according to Sherdog.com's Fight Finder. He has competed for both the SHOOTO and Cage Force promotions.
Tan, 5-2, according to Sherdog, made his UFC debut at UFC 72 where he suffered a first round knockout loss against Marcus Davis last June. He rebounded with a unanimous decision victory over Alexandre Izidro at Cage Gladiators 4 this past August.
Tan's opponent, Kim, will be making his UFC debut on the show. According to the UFC's website, he sports a lifetime MMA record of 9-1-1 and most recently fought to a win and a draw in two fights against Hidehiko Hasegawa in the DEEP promotion.

Is Ortiz vs. Machida at UFC 84 still scheduled?
Rumors are now swirling that a planned light heavyweight bout between Tito Ortiz and Lyoto Machida at UFC 84 on May 24 is now off following a recent interview by Renato "Babalu" Sobral on PunchDrunkGamer.com in which Sobral is quoted as saying:
PDG: Last time we talked you said that Lyoto Machida would be the UFC 205lb Champion someday. What do you think of his rumored upcoming match with Tito Ortiz?
Babalu:
I heard that Tito is not going to fight him anymore, so they are going
to have to find another opponent for Machida. I got the news a couple
of days ago that he was fighting someone else.
PDG: It didn’t really seem like Tito wanted that fight.
Babalu:
I don’t know about Tito man……he is a celebrity. He makes a lot of
money outside of fighting so I don’t know if he really wants to fight.
Sobral's comments are hardly official, however, knowing Ortiz's history would it be all that surprising that the fight is off?

Goerges St. Pierre unhappy with Matt Serra
3 months ago
In a new interview with the Ottawa Sun, it sounds like Georges St. Pierre is trying to turn his upcoming match vs. Matt Serra for the welterweight title on April 19 at UFC 84 into a grudge match:
"We'll see what's going to happen next time. We'll see if he's as
good at fighting as he is at talking," Rush said, growing noticeably
hot under the collar. "I have respect for him, but he has said a lot of
things about me. I will let my fists do the talking next time I fight
him. I've never answered him back. Next time I fight him, he's going to
feel it.
"A lot of people asked me, 'what happened to you? You didn't
look the same in your fight.' Maybe I shouldn't have said it, but I
said I had issues, maybe I should have taken that fight. But I took it
and I lost to a better man. That's it.
"He said I was giving excuses. Which is bad. I shouldn't say
those things. But I did. He said, 'aw Frenchy, go back to your red wine
and hockey game.' I'm a Frenchy guy ... okay man, we'll see next time.
I never answered back to him, but I'm going to let my fist answer back
next time. He's not my friend. I had a good relationship with him. He's
a nice guy, he was a nice guy, until he crossed the line. Perfect. It's
going to be a different story next time.
"I don't fight with my emotion," he added, "but when I have
somebody say something like this, it gives me a lot of drive to train
harder. So that's all good. I love that stuff."
