Report: HDNet Fights cancels February show

HDNet Fights has canceled its next scheduled card for February 15 at the American Airlines Center in Dallas, Texas, reports Loretta Hunt of The Fight Network.

“We’re taking the time to build a little more infrastructure that’s all our own,” HDNet Fights president Guy Mezger is quoted as saying in the article. “Right now, we share a lot of it with HDNet and the [Dallas] Mavericks.”

According to Hunt, HDNet Fights will hold its next card during early spring or summer, depending on venue availability.

In the meantime, HDNet will focus on televising events from its multiple content partners that includes the IFL, Sportfight, and Ring of Combat. The article also mentions the possibility of a second Yarrenoka! event in March.

There's been some speculation on message boards that the cancellation is a bad sign for the financial stability of Mark Cuban's fledgling fight promotion. That may or may not be the case.

Despite abundant personal wealth, Cuban has always preached fiscal responsibility. The measure of success for the company is also different than that of other promotions. Mixed martial arts has been one of the highest rated programs on Cuban's high-definition cable channel, HDNet. The goal of HDNet Fights is to produce content for Cuban's various distribution platforms.

February is also slated to be a busy month in MMA with the UFC, WEC, EliteXC, the IFL, and even BodogFIGHT all expected to promote shows.

Another potential issue could have be the availability of Frank Trigg. After Trigg and Jason "Mayhem" Miller both won their respective HDNet Fights bouts in December, speculation grew that the two would face each other in a rematch from a previous fight that took place in the ICON Sport promotion.

While Trigg is open to the rematch with Miller, he indicated during an interview with FiveOuncesOfPain.com that he currently has business and family commitments scheduled for February and March. Trigg's answer was in response to a question regarding whether he had interest in competing for M-1 Global:

I would love to fight for M-1 if he can get it worked out. Unfortunately, their first fight, I believe is going to be in February, the rumor is Chicago. I’m going to be unable to compete in that because I just have so many things going on with my clothing line and what we have to do with Triggonomics during February and March and of course, my kids’ spring breaks are during those times so I have to be able to see the kids during those times as well.

To write off HDNet Fights at this point seems a little premature.
