Details revealed about former UFC... (viewed 1,201 times)

Details are now emerging in regard to former UFC owner Bob Meyrowitz's attempt to return to the mixed martial arts business.

ProElite.com (SamCaplan.ProElite.com) received a press release this morning announcing that the name of Meyrowitz's new promotion is "YAMMA Pit Fighting."

YAMMA Pit Fighting has scheduled its first event for April 11 at the Trump Taj Mahal in Atlantic City, NJ. According to the release, the promotion is planning a series of pay-per-view events, starting with the April event.

Meyrowitz's new promotion is also promising some new innovations.

"YAMMA Pit Fighting will take a unique approach to the sport by reviving the tournament fighting format and unveiling a new fighting surface that promises to revolutionize the traditional MMA approach," the release states.

In addition to a new fighting surface, the promotion plans to restore that same one-night tournament concept that was a fixture of early-UFC events. Two "Superfights" are being promised for the first card in addition to a "heavyweight" tournament.

Live Nation, a subsidiary of Clear Channel, has been previously reported as a financial backer in Meyrowitz's new promotion.

Meyrowitz was part-owner of the UFC from 1993-2001. His former company, the Semaphore Entertainment Group was a pay-per-view distribition company involved with bringing the first UFCs to PPV.

Originally approached as just a distribition outlet, SEG acquired an ownership stake in the UFC after being countacted by founders Rorion Gracie and Art Davie. As time went on, SEG assumed a larger ownership stake as other owners gradually sold off their shares.

Meyrowitz has been involved with several entertainment businesses over the years and became infamous for operating the UFC in the late-90s after it had been banned in 48 states.

Soon after being denied approval for regulation in Nevada, SEG sold the UFC to Frank Fertitta, Lorenzo Fertitta, and Dana White in 2001.
