Edwards vs. Berto set for Feb. 16... (viewed 536 times)
A match at 160 lbs. between Edson Berto and Yves Edwards has been signed for EliteXC's next card on February 16 in Miami at the BankUnited Arena.
Edwards had been rumored to be fighting Kyle Bradley on EliteXC's upcoming ShoXC card on January 25 in Atlantic City, but a potential bout against Bradley never came to fruition and Bradley is now believed to be headed to the UFC.
Berto, 13-4-1, has not fought in EliteXC since a third round knockout against K.J. Noons in the main event of July's ShoXC event.
He's since has two fights for the Florida-based Real Fighting Championships, winning both bouts via unanimous decision.
Edwards, 32-13-1, was once considered one of the top lightweight fighters in the world. He began to lose that reputation after suffering a split decision loss against Joachim Hansen during PRIDE's Bushido 9 in September of 2005. Including the loss to Hansen, he would go on to lose five out of his next six fights.
Following a decision to train with American Top Team in Florida, Edwards has regained some momentum as he's now undefeated in his last two fights. He snapped a two-fight losing streak when he submitted Nick Gonzalez with a rear naked choke at 3:05 of round 1 during EliteXC's "Renegade" show in Corpus Christi, Texas on November 10.
Edwards followed up the win over Gonzalez with another victory via rear naked choke submission, this time over Alonzo Martinez during HDNet Fights' "Reckless Abandon" card on December 15.
EliteXC's card on Feb. 16 is starting to fill out. In addition to the main event between Kimbo Slice vs. Tank Abbott and the bout between Edwards and Berto, a middleweight match between Kyle Noke and Scott Smith is slated along with separate heavyweight bouts featuring James Thompson and Antonio Silva.
