Report: Serra confirms April 19 fight... (viewed 369 times)
UFC welterweight champion Matt Serra confirmed Friday that he will be defending his title against Georges St. Pierre sometime in April in Montreal, writes Mike Chiapetta of NBCSports.com:
Matt Serra and Georges St. Pierre will meet for the UFC welterweight title during an April event in Montreal, Serra confirmed to NBCSports.com on Friday.
The April UFC event in Montreal is tentatively scheduled for April 19 at the Bell Centre.
The article also confirms rumors that Serra's injured back, which prevented him from making a scheduled title defense against Matt Hughes at UFC 79 on Dec. 29, is improving:
The Long Island native told NBCSports.com's John Moody that his back has been rapidly improving and is excited about defending the championship, albeit in St. Pierre's hometown.
That is definitely good to hear that Serra's back is improving. It will be interesting to see if he can make it through his training camp for the fight without re-injuring it.
Taking an early look at Serra vs. GSP II, one has to assume that once against St. Pierre will enter the encounter as the overwhelming favorite coming off dominating performances against Hughes and also Josh Koscheck.
I'd have to agree with the oddmakers. As much as I respect Serra, I just don't think lightning is going to strike twice. St. Pierre is pound-for-pound the best fighter in the world. As long as he trains properly and avoids Serra's heavy right hand, it should be a decisive victory for him as he reclaims the welterweight title.
